A lot was not really valued by the world until recently. I saw not just the quality of the material in the trimmings but also in the simple packaging; the winders and reels that ribbons were wound onto, the card mounts for buttons and even the thread that attached them...all good quality and yet discarded. I picked up my treasures for 10p or 50p, the prices often crudely written straight onto the paper in felt tip pen.

At my great grandmothers' home I found many more treasures and among them were packets of shelf edging which have paper lace borders to make decorate the shelves of larders and dressers. Many were untouched with pretty bands of paper to secure them but the packets that were opened I allowed myself to use on my shelves. Over time they wore away and like the old lace they emulate started to yellow and disintegrate.

Old empty snail shells do not last forever, I collect them from around the garden and use them on top of garden canes but was surprised to see that they fade. Always a collector of organic packaging, shells, seed pods and galls, to me they are just like the ribbon reels.

The web is a single Brussels stitch needlelace mesh made in the finest lacemaker thread I could find. I would have put a spiders web across them if I could but instead I made my own.
the glass pinglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09149792128451553063noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1537004363729874810.post-67434851299886626482023-08-31T07:54:00.001-07:002023-08-31T07:54:00.141-07:00The Embroiderer's Crown

All those needles I get through.... I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain

Upon the glass and listen for reply,
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.<span style="font-family: "Courier 10 Pitch", Courier, monospace;">

Named after the access to my studio 'we' spent over a decade collecting noises, some of them tangible and some of them that can't be heard by everyone.

Finally I have released them all on 78, with embroidered labels, and in the process realised that even a supposed hard format is in itself conceptual because without the means to play the disc we can only trust that there is sound. Luckily these 'recordings' are already in your head, some literally, and are therefore free to listen to and it is only the artwork that is lacking...

So hear I present my first album 'L'Aiguilles Verres'

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; There are three parts and this is the first section called 'Copes and Shifts'; a book of twelfth scale garments. It references the couture garment sample books of the late 19thC which Paris couturiers used to show their ideas to clients abroad. This however is a book of Cultural Shifts and Emotional Copes to inhabit from afar.

The first Cultural Shift is called 'Awake'.
Shifts were an undergarment worn by all women as underwear until the 20thC. and the pattern for this one was found in the Janet Arnold 'Patterns of Fashion' books.

Made from an antique linen handkerchief this little shift is embroidered with a weeping eye and looks at Elizabethan culture, activism and shame. In that portrait she is also depicted wearing a very unusual and little known garment called a conch. This is essentially a super fine shawl with a wired edge at the top, a very expensive and elite garment.I made this tiny one in cotton organdie and lightly embroidered around the edges. I was asked a while back to submit a piece of work to a project devised by the poet Tom Sharp. He has written an extraordinary piece called 'The Weeping Cufflinks' revealing the true and otherworldly nature of the financial markets and city traders. He called together artists from many disciplines to create their own response to this and then the virus struck.....Not to be put off by this the works are now being shown initially on an instagram account 'Faery Fellers' with a website to follow.
This copy of the Financial Times is quite clearly the property of Christina Rossetti's goblins, in fact the only legible words on it are 'come buy' with the terrible consequences of greed being hidden under ink. The tell tale berries are growing through the header though, dark and addictive, the fragile paper sagging under the hidden glama of the trader fae. It is a rare glimpse of reality, the correlation between paper and money and human commodities. This copy had been left on a tree stump....on April 1st.
The most useful things in a studio are the things without purpose. Here in a corner are two old corset stands and an old piece of work.
The piece is a version of an old christening cushion, also found here.
This is a tiny corset in very plain cloth which serendipitously fitted my tiny corset display stand. There was a time when I could just pick these things up at antique markets and nobody else wanted them !! She sits atop a very plain hat box from Norway.
Between my two desks (actually there are three...) is an old set of shelves held up in part with books. Here I keep my tiny apothecary jars of natural objects; leaf skeletons, lichen, seed pods and so forth.
On one of the window sills are jars for some of my old wooden cotton reels; you may notice that I label my jars with their emotional contents....hope, despair, wabi sabi, luck.
